Overview

Type 1 diabetes is a chronic autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas, leading to little or no insulin production. Without insulin, the body cannot move glucose from the blood into cells for energy, resulting in high blood sugar that, if untreated, can cause serious complications. Type 1 diabetes typically requires lifelong insulin therapy along with blood glucose monitoring and careful management of diet and lifestyle. It is distinct from type 2 diabetes, which arises mainly from insulin resistance and reduced insulin effectiveness. Within the scope of a journal focused on Bioinformatics and Diabetes, research in this area has examined beta-cell function in type 1 diabetes, suggesting that residual function may be greater than commonly presumed, and has investigated reduced tissue oxygenation and altered Valsalva hemodynamics in young adults with the condition. These studies address the underlying physiology and the wider effects of the disease. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to type 1 diabetes and diabetes more broadly, offering clinicians, researchers, and students freely accessible scientific work on the biology, monitoring, and management of diabetes.
